The provision of childcare in Ireland has undergone significant change in recent times. Although the provision of childcare by relatives and childminders to pre-school and school-age children continues to be an important resource for many parents, there has been an increased demand for formal childcare provided by crèches, childcare centres, playgroups and preschool facilities. Furthermore, the fact that the number of children in the 0-6 age group has been rising steadily in recent years means that non-parental childcare will continue to be a serious issue for families in Ireland.
